Two words that describe Janet Sutter when it comes to woodturning are resourceful and determined. Unable to find adult courses to take, she learned by spending her lunch and plan periods in the woodshop at the high school where she taught. She built desks, an entertainment center and was introduced to the lathe before budget cuts ended her school’s woodworking program.

Desiring to continue, she acquired two quite old Craftsman spindle lathes and converted one to a bowl lathe. The more she turned the more she wanted--chucks, accessories, more tools, a better lathe, and many new projects.  Janet built a successful marketing strategy that combined her business knowledge, computer skills, and woodturning abilities. Now her work can be found all over the USA and abroad.

When her school announced the opportunity to begin Clubs in 2016, Janet applied for an Education Grant with the American Association of Woodturners.  Within two weeks of receiving the money sponsors were secured, lathes and tools purchased, and students started meeting after school daily to learn to turn. Janet has also used the lathes as a way to increase the number of women actively turning in her club, the South Kansas Woodturners, with monthly opportunities to gather and turn.

Actively participating in her club, teaching others to turn, donating to Beads of Courage and the WIT collaborative project have all been great ways to give to others through the joy of woodturning. Janet enjoys sharing her passion and enthusiasm for woodturning with anyone who has an interest in learning.
